Volunteer Training Program
Anyone who wishes to become a volunteer with the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program must complete 30 hours of training conducted by the GAL staff and others in the Safe Children Coalition network. The training is learner-centered, interactive and hands-on. It is designed to provide the volunteer with the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to be a GAL volunteer, an advocate for children involved in the court system through no fault of their own.

The training curriculum includes:

  1. learning the role of a volunteer Guardian ad Litem
  2. an introduction to the laws, the child protection system and the courts
  3. exploring cultural awareness
  4. understanding families and children
  5. communicating as a GAL
  6. practicing the GAL role: monitoring and reporting
